TRANSPORTATION

Hong Kong enjoys one of the world’s safest and most efficient public transport systems. Hotel guests staying at The Pottinger Hong Kong and exploring Central are unlikely to need more than their own legs to get around, but travelling to anywhere further afield is a breeze—whether by taxi, bus, minibus, tram, MTR railway or ferry.

FERRY FERRY

The world-famous Star Ferry runs from the nearby Central Piers, offering a stunningly picturesque harbour ride across to Kowloon for just a couple of Hong Kong dollars. Take the trip at night to see neon-clad Hong Kong in its full glory. Further west along the harbour, the Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Terminal, Sheung Wan is the terminus for fast ferries to and from Macau which is famous for its historic colonial architecture and its casinos.

TRAM TRAM

Hong Kong’s tramway runs the length of Hong Kong Island, from Kennedy Town in the west to Chai Wan in the east. A nostalgic way of getting about, it’s not particularly fast but full of character. Keen photographers should climb to the upper deck and look for a seat up at the front.

TAXI TAXI

Taxis in Hong Kong are inexpensive and comfortable ways to get around the city. All fares are metered and receipts are issued upon request. At certain times of day — when drivers change shifts, for example — it can be hard to find a free taxi, but most of the time they are abundant.

MTR The Mass Transit Railway (MTR)

The Mass Transit Railway (MTR) is a fast, efficient, and comfortable way of getting around in Hong Kong while avoiding traffic jams and other inconveniences. The MTR network is extensive and continuing to grow. The Pottinger Hong Kong is situated near two MTR stations, Central Station and Sheung Wan Station.

BUS AND MINIBUS BUS AND MINIBUS

Hong Kong bus and minibus routes radiate out from Central to numerous destinations. Buses for Stanley, for instance, originate from the bus terminus under Exchange Square. Buses run frequently, but they can get crowded at certain times of day. Hotel guests at The Pottinger Hong Kong using minibuses in Hong Kong should be aware that there are few official bus-stops; to get on, wave your arm at the driver; to get off, shout at him to stop.
